Easy Drop Cloth Crab Canvas

Drop Cloth Crab Art

There are some of us who just have a thing for crabs. I am not just talking about a thing for eating, but a thing  for displaying them. This love is akin to the obsession that many have for the Maryland Flag (remember my crab on burlap, which featured both the Maryland flag and a blue crab?).

Now, I am not judging; swing by my house and you’ll find nods to those crustaceans (and the Maryland flag).

The other day, I made an easy drop cloth crab canvas thing for one of my wonderful aunts. She recently sent me some gorgeous hand-knitted and crocheted scarves, and I wanted to send her a little thanks.

So I came up with this easy drop cloth crab canvas.

The pictures will tell the story, but here are a few tips for you folks at home.

I had an old canvas, which I spray painted because I wanted to make sure the old marks didn’t show through when I covered it with the drop cloth. You could easily use a new one, but I have a little stockpile of old canvases (and I am like Captain Planet, so I reused that ish).

I then covered the canvas with the drop cloth. Staple and pull tightly, and wrap the corners like you would a present.

Before I put paint to the drop cloth, I used chalk to outline my crab. I used a google image of the crab, and freehanded it. HOWEVER, you could print out a crab, trace over it with chalk, and then place the chalk drawing down onto the canvas/drop cloth to get an outline. This is a similar technique to how some people create those gorgeous chalkboard art designs.

Who else out there gets this crab obsession?

Target Obsession

If you are obsessed with Target like me, then you know exactly how a “quick” trip can turn into a shopping spree. The dollar spot, end caps and red sale signs get me every time! And let’s talk about the new home department vignette displays. A-dorbes! Recently, I’ve been obsessing over two of the store’s new brands. I thought I would share with my fellow Target lovers, in case you need a reason for a quick Target run.

Earlier this month, Target released its Oh Joy baby and home décor line in collaboration with Joy Cho, who started as a blogger like us ladies. Her simple, colorful and whimsy point of view has launched the Oh Joy brand to a design studio with multiple licensed product lines. This collection features bright colors, fun patterns and feminine vibes. I picked up the dots crib sheet for baby #2’s nursery (more on that later) and the diaper bag (currently out of stock). Love love both!

This Saturday, the store will debut its new children’s line Pillowfort. It’s aimed to be a brand that can grow with your child and fit your home’s design aesthetic. My local stores have already put a few items on display. Most accessories will be available this weekend and furniture pieces will be released this summer. I’m in LOVE with everything in this modern/Land of Nod-esque collection. It offers style, spunk, imagination and comfort. I’m especially obsessing over the toucan bedding, arrow wall décor and mint chairs. Hoping to snatch those this weekend for L. Just take my money already Target!

Hope some of my favorite things caught your eye as well. Let us know what is your Target obsession?!

PS-Since the new children’s line is making it’s way to stores, the older stuff are now 70% off!

Ideas for displaying Kids’ Artwork

Between school and home, my two boys are constantly creating masterpieces. With the constant influx of painted paper, cardboard box sculptures, and pipecleaner statues, my smallish house was getting smaller. So I came (and researched) up with some ideas for displaying kids’ artwork.

Here are some of the ideas for displaying kids’ artwork that I have employed.

Gallery Walls

 Kid's Artwork

I love the splash of color their artwork brings to the room. A touch of whimsy and something much more personal than a framed reproduction. Not to mention the boys love that their work is on display.

In the boys’ play area in the basement, I framed a gallery wall with painter’s tape. Nothing is permanent, and it cost $3 (the cost of the roll of the tape)

Changeable Frames and Bullentin-esque Boards

Here’s another gallery wall in the house.  The snowman in this gallery wall is in a changeable frame. These changeable frames are great. You don’t have to take the frame off the wall, just flip open, and slide in the new art. Brilliant!

Remember the  Holiday Card Holder frame? Well, I kept that puppy up and use it now as another spot for displaying my guys’ work.

Photo Books

Here’s my latest solution to the piles of art. After each year, I take pictures of each of my boys’ art. I upload, crop, and put into a picture/photo book. I can then recycle all that paper, save on space, and give the boys their very own book of art.

How do you manage the art of your kid’s (kids’) masterpieces ?
