Burlap Maryland Crab Flag

Most Marylanders love the state flag. We proudly wear the flag on our socks, shirts, flip flops,  belts, bathing suits, etc. In the market for all things Maryland? Check out Route One Apparel– an apparel company that specializes in Maryland Pride apparel, which includes a heavy emphasis on the MD flag. People even have baby pacifiers emblazoned  with the Maryland Flag.

And it is no wonder, as it has been described as the perfect state flag (Check out the history of the flag here).

However, there are some that do not get our love for the Maryland flag (gasp). I know a few who do not share the same sentiment as I. I would name names, but I fear the backlash and vitriol that these “friends” and my husband (wait, what) would receive.

As for me, I love flags. I mean, my favorite holiday is Flag Day (check out my patriotic mantel).  I like the history and symbolism behind flags (I smell a lesson on symbolism and flags coming to the classroom this fall– educators, stay tuned…), and Maryland’s flag is rich with both. It symbolizes state sovereignty, struggle, challenge, loyalty, and unity. What’s not to like?

Okay. Enough with the state flag love. Let’s get to the project.

Besides the MD flag, the Chesapeake region has a strong affinity for crabs (they’re delicious, for one), so I combined the two for this project.

What You’ll Need:

- Print out of the Maryland Flag. I used this one ; and this one.

- Print out of the Maryland Blue Crab

-Assorted Paint Brushes

- Acrylic Craft Paint in MD flag colors (I suppose you could adapt this to another state flag…)

- A Sharpie

- Burlap— my burlap was from http://burlapfabric.com/– I can’t say enough great things about that site!

What You’ll Do:

- Cut out the Maryland Crab

Maryland Flag Burlap Art

- Trace the Flag template with your Marker– I do this so it is easier to see under the burlap.

- Tape the flag onto a surface, and place your burlap over it.

MD Burlap Flag

The flag is under the burlap, which will serve as your guide when painting. I tape both the burlap and the template so nothing shifts.

- Place the cut out crap in the center of the flag (stick some tape under the crab, so it doesn’t shift while painting).

- Begin painting.

Maryland Burlap Flag- Be as precise as possible along the crab outline– You want your lines to be crisp and your paint to thicker here.

- Doneso! Peel off the crab and admire your beautiful Maryland Pride work.

Burlap Maryland Crab Flag-Frame it.

If you don’t like the crab, you can always just complete this project without the crab– It is just as lovely.

What about you? Do you share my affinity for your state flag? Or is the Maryland Flag just like snowballs (a delicious summer treat– not a winter weapon), and only natives from Maryland share this obsession? Please tell me you know what a snowball is (and what your favorite flavor is, and if you add marshmallow or ice cream on top)!

Outfit Ideas: Red, White and Blue

What’s more Americana than red, white and blue? This patriotic color scheme is more than just a flag on a t-shirt on the 4th of July. Variations of this color combination can be worn all year round. Quite a few designers have created timeless pieces in this palette for their collections. I’m currently crushing on the collaboration between Zooey Deschanel and Tommy Hilfiger. I mean she’s so stinkin’ cute. Inspired by this collection, I’ve gathered a few of my favorite red, white and blue outfits to share.

First up, horizontal stripes. A basic and classic pattern that I consider as a wardrobe staple. Add a few red accents and it’s ready for work or a family BBQ. Horizontal stripes can tricky. It’s a good idea to play around with proportion of the stripes and silhouette of the garment to find something that flatters your body type.

Nautical is an easy way to incorporate this color combination. I’m partial to anchor prints for the summer. To avoid looking too sailor-ish, use small accents or focus on just one large graphic.

The trend of color blocking is still going strong. Red, white and blue is a great way to try out this fashion craze if you’ve been staying away. Generally I try to avoid neons and go for colors that are more versatile. Tim gun may consider this combination boring and safe, but high lighter yellow just isn’t for me.

A Vintage Garden Bridal Shower

So over the past few weeks I showed you how to Age Terracotta Pots, create a Moss Covered Letter, and emboss some paper goods. All of these crafts were part of a bridal shower, hosted by my mother-in-law for our cousin Justine. The theme of the shower was vintage garden and boy did the house transform and play the part beautifully!

Here are a few shots from the shower—it’s amazing what a bit of planning, creativity, and elbow grease can accomplish! I think it was beautiful and the pictures do not even do it justice.

I just love this sign. My mother-in-law hand painted the letters and distressed each one—I thought it was a printable it looks so perfect! The raffia is a great touch to add to the vintage feel of the shower. Since this sign isn’t customized to the bride and groom, the family can use it for future weddings.

There were lots of small chalkboards throughout the shower—with cute wedding related phrases or quotes. This just solidifies the notion that chalkboards are the perfect décor for any occasion.

The laundry room underwent a transformation and became the drinks/dessert area. Never underestimate the power of white tablecloths and a burlap accent runner. A few garden related items were all that were needed to connect this room to the theme.

The desserts served were mini pastries, cookies, and that gorgeous cake—made to look like a terracotta pot with flowers! It was not only pretty to look at but pretty delicious too.

Vintage Garden Bridal Shower Cookies
The cookies were made by yours truly. I have been dying to try out the frame cookie cutter (from Karen’s Cookies) and thought that this was the perfect occasion. Given the natural theme, I wanted do to more subdued and simple cookies. It was my first time writing with icing, and I think they came out pretty good!

As the shower was in the mid afternoon, the food served was light and refreshing. The greenery of the different salads enhanced the theme and looked lovely on the table.

Check out this moss covered gift box that my sister-in-law, Lauren, made. Is it not the cutest thing ever? It served as décor right up until Justine opened it as a gift. Lauren is a graphic designer and extremely artistic/clever. Not only did she make the box, but also the gift inside—a cute frame that acts as a wedding ring holder. Maybe one day Lauren will feature some of her talents on our blog :)

Vintage Garden Bridal ShowerThe Moss Covered G that I posted about earlier looked great in the dining room. In addition to being décor, it serves as a personalized gift for the bride and groom.

Vintage Garden Bridal ShowerAside from the food in the dining room, there was also a table full of fruit, cheese, grilled vegetables, dips, etc. Again, all finger food that was light and well suited for an afternoon shower. I thought the table scape was beautiful.

Vintage Garden Bridal ShowerSee this statue? Can you believe my mother in law aged this herself?? Incredible!

The bride and groom received many well wishes on the wishing tree. The embossed tags from my earlier blog post looked great on the tree. The tree was a gift for the bride and groom for their new home.

Vintage Garden Bridal ShowerRemember those terracotta pots we showed you how to age? Here’s the final product! Each guest received an herb to take home—the pots/herbs were a huge success, everyone loved them. Talk about a perfect favor for a vintage garden shower!

The shower was a wonderful day for everyone—especially for the bride and her family. It was a lot of fun making some of the crafts that were featured in the shower. With lots of younger siblings and cousins in our family, I’m sensing that there might be more happy family occasions to plan and craft for in the future!
