Easy Moss Covered Topiaries

I’m starting to get worried for my #1 boo, Burlap, because lately moss has been the word in my house (anyone start sing “Grease is the Word” ? No? Weirdos).

I am really digging these moss sheets lately because they lend themselves to some easy and fast crafts especially these easy moss covered topiaries

Moss Topiary 3

This is a really easy one, so the directions are a little sparse, but seriously, you really don’t need directions…

What You’ll Need:

1. A package of moss. Like this.

2. Styrofoam cones

3. Green Paint and Paint of your choice for your flowerpot.

4. A Flowerpot or two

5. burlap scraps and some twine.

6. Raffia (optional).

7. Hot glue and a hot glue gun.

8. A stick (I got my sticks from my hedges).

9. Loose Moss

What You’ll Do:

1. Paint the bottom of the cones (just in case someone gets up close and personal with your topiary, it will look green from the bottom..)

Cones Moss Topiary2. Paint your flowerpot. I used a sample paint from Valspar. I love those sample paints.

Slap it on!

3. Plug in your glue gun, and start gluing the sheets of moss to the styrofoam.

Cover the Cones4. Place a piece of styrofoam or floral foam in the flower pot, jam a stick in the bottom of the cone and into the foam in the pot, cover the top with loose moss,  and voila!

5. Wrap a piece of burlap around the flowerpot, and tie it with twine, wrap some raffia around the “tree” (if you would like) and you are doneso!

Not bad for a quick craft, huh?

Spring Mantel in the house

Anyone ever watch In The House? Oh, geesh, I loved that show and LL Cool J. Now while the reference is a throwback to the ’90s (hello, 1996!), this Spring Mantel is not donning a Kangol hat and singing “Hey Lover” (although, maybe next mantel… nah).

If anyone is keeping tally, this is Mantel number 3 for 2014. First, there was my Valentine’s Day Mantel and then there was my Kiss Me, I’m a March Mantel. I have to be honest, I had a difficult time with this Spring Mantel because I didn’t want to spend a thing, again, and I (gasp) was not feeling the mantel love, but I pushed forth and through.

Now, my husband calls this my Mantel of Junk, but I prefer the term eclectic.

Let’s check her out..

 Spring Mantel

There is a collection of framed art in this Spring Mantel, and all of it  can be recreated (or bought).

Spring Mantel

The deer print on muslin was made with my good friend, Bailey. It’s a rather simple project of ironing the fabric onto freezer paper and running it through the printer. Bailey and I made a ton of fabric prints. We were/are slightly obsessed.

The little bird in the frame is a scrapbook paper punch-out. Seriously, how cute is that?

Bunny Easter Art

The little framed bunny silhouette is another scrapbook paper 3 minute project.

The black and white print is a gift from my high school pal and forever friend, Kristen. She took an art class on carving and made all of us high school gals fruits prints of her labor. If you are interested in learning this art, and you are in the Baltimore area, my sister is running a class on print/carving; you will leave with your own piece of art. You can contact her here.  And if, you would prefer to buy, she also has an etsy shop of all of her own prints. My personal favorite is her prints on dictionary paper, which would look adorable on a Spring Mantel.

Spring Mantel

A lot of my Spring Mantel components may look familiar from my March Mantel– Those little birds from the retirement home’s gift shop are still hanging out, and so are the branches of The Dollar Tree forsythia in the beer growler.

I added two new little creatures to the mix, though: A cute straw bunny— is he not the cutest thing ever?( I am a sucker for those straw creatures)– and a glass duck, which belongs to Finn is a gift from my husband’s Aunt “Sis,” who lived to an impressive 95 years and was sharp, sweet, and strong.

And, of course, I added a really easy and simple banner from scrapbook paper.

There she is (yup, my mantel is still taking the feminine case).

Stay tuned for my next mantel which will showcase my favorite holiday: Flag Day!

Spring Door Decor

Spring Door Decor

As seasons change and I focus on changing up the décor inside my house, I’m sure not to neglect the exterior as well. You might have noticed Rona, Grace, and I have a thing for wreaths (Valentine’s, Berry Letter, Burlap Bubble, Boxwood Bunny). I’m sure there will be many more to come, but here’s another piece of spring door decor to add to the list.

For spring I wanted to get some floral action going on the front door. One day I was checking out HGTV’s website and found this lovely creation (although those colors are a bit more early fall to me than spring). I hit up my favorite crafting stores and set out to make my own version. There aren’t any instructions for this craft because it’s really just your basic flower arrangement.

What you need:

  • Basket
  • Flowers/greens of your choice
  • Foam
  • Ribbon of your choice

Choose a basic layout/pattern for your blooms and cut the stems down to size. I chose to stick a piece of floral foam in the bottom of my basket so my stems wouldn’t wobble around.

Spring Door Decor 2 Interesting how a just a few flowers and a basket can make such a cute decoration.

Perfect for the spring!
