Heat Embossing 101

Embossing is fabulous—it’s the perfect way to embellish paper and turn it into something special. Have invitations to send out? Place cards to make for that fancy get-together? Gift tags to stick on those carefully selected presents? Why not emboss all of these things and add a little glamour to what you do!

You’ve all seen embossed items—today I’m going to describe heat embossing so your design is upraised from the paper. It is a very easy process that anyone can do. The following tutorial shows my mother-in-law and I making the tags for a Wishing Tree at a recent bridal shower. We got our goodies at Paper Source– be warned you will buy everything you see– I love this place!

What you need:

Paper—whatever you are creating (tags, invites, etc.)

Ink—in the colors you would like your design to be

**Pigment ink is what you need- it dries slower so you can apply the powder. VersaMark

Watermark is clear ink and is the brand that I’ve used- found at craft stores.**

Embossing Powder—in the colors you would like your design to be

Embossing Heat Tool—sold in craft stores—Walmart has one for $15

Rubber Stamp/Design of your choose

Paper/Folder- as a work surface to catch overflow powder

Step 1:

Choose your color(s) and corresponding stamps. We had a border stamp which would be black and a letter ‘G’ which would be gold.

With this in mind, we planned to use a black ink pad for the border coupled with clear embossing powder. For the ‘G’ we would use the VersaMark clear ink pad and gold embossing powder on top of the clear stamped ‘G’.

Step 2:

After stamping each paper with the border in black ink we were ready to start the embossing.

Step 3:

Using the clear ink pad we stamped the ‘G’ in the center of each oval. As it’s a clear stamp, be sure to take note of what you’ve stamped—if you lose track, you can see it if you look closely.

emboss step 2

Step 4:

After the clear ‘G’ is on the paper, sprinkle the embossing powder on top. You’ll see that it sticks to the stamp. Shake off the excess powder.

This is where it’s crucial to have a manila folder or a slightly folded piece of paper underneath. The excess powder will fall onto the paper and you can then refill your powder container every once in a while. You do not want to waste this stuff!

powdered G

Step 5:

Use your heat tool to melt the grains of powder into a smooth surface. It’s nerdy, but I think it’s kind of cool to see just how quickly it melts into your upraised design.

If you’re doing a large project (we did about 50 cards) and you have a helper, it is best to get an assembly line going. My mother-in-law stamped and passed them off to me for sprinkling/heating.

Just a note- If you don’t have a heat tool, I’ve seen online that it works with some hairdryers, but you need it to be super hot and it takes longer to do. I haven’t personally known anyone to use this method.

emboss step 6

Step 6:

Your newly embossed products are good to go! You can do really neat things with embossing, such as tone on tone, or emboss the design and then color the background only with a contrasting ink color. The possibilities are vast and it is an easy craft with a great impact.

Beach Baby Essentials

Over Memorial Day weekend, we loaded up the car for our first beach trip of the reason. Going to the beach with a energizer bunny 14 months old meant we needed to be prepared. You never know when a meltdown is going to happen and how she’s going to react to the sand and frigid ocean water. I loaded the beach bag with a few, what I consider as, beach baby essentials to make the trip enjoyable for the whole family.

1. Functional beach wear

I put L in a short sleeve rash guard and a reusable swim diaper. I prefer this combo over a one piece suit. This option allows for more coverage and easy changing in case of accidents. The reusable swim diaper has worked well in the pool before, but this time I noticed a couple giant wet spots on the beach blanket (we were there for 2.5 hours). I never tried disposable swim diapers before. Are they more absorbent?

2. Sun screen

With L’s eczema and sensitive skin, we are very selective with the products we use on her. We’ve tried many other organic brands’ sunscreen. The Badgers brand is the only one that hasn’t caused any skin irritations or flare ups. Because it’s all natural plant based, the consistency is super creamy which makes it difficult to rub in. But I’m ok with my child looking a bit pasty.

3. Convenient cleansers

Hand sanitizer and baby powder are my go to items for the beach. L’s into picking up random things these days. Having sanitizer on hand makes for easy cleaning for a piece of mind. And I’m sure you all know about the trick of getting sand off your body with baby powder. It really is magical!

4. Toys

I did not pack a ton, just a few sand toys and bubbles. L loves to people watch; there is plenty of that on the beach. In a pinch, I can always give her an empty water bottle to entertain her for a little while. The girl loves playing with trash. Who am I to judge?

5. Snacks and treats

L loves cheddar bunnies and yogurt drops. We usually reserve them as special treats. I figured she would be pretty happy with munching on those. I packed a snack pouch in the cooler as a healthy option. And of course, her favorite sippy cup.

Oh! The beach bag was a $7.99 find at TJ Maxx. It’s made from a very fine burlap. I liked it so much I bought a second one in a blue crab print. Gotta represent MD!

We had a great time. The weather was perfect. L was a little apprehensive about the sand at first, but once I broke out the toys and snacks she was happy. I think the 2 hour morning nap helped a little too. Are you ready for beach season? Do you have any beach essential items? What are your tricks to keep the kids busy and happy on the beach?

BurlapFabric.com has got it going on

You, guys! We have some big burlap news for you. A couple of weeks ago, we were contacted by burlapfabric.com. Because of the burlap and natural fiber lovefest that happens here (like the burlap bubble wreath, St. Patrick’s Day Banner, or twine and jute covered eggs), burlapfabric.com generously asked us to peruse their site and select a couple of items.

Can you imagine the squealing that took place when we received this news?

Now, the hard part was deciding what items to choose because this site has it all. It was a burlap dream come true.

They have a wide range of burlap widths, so if you are making a table runner, you can order burlap that you will not have to cut, and if you are making curtains or something of a grander scale, you have options to GO BIG (to 72″ wide). BurlapFabric.com also treats/sanitizes some of their burlap, so if you hate the smell of burlap (I don’t, but I’m weird), but love the look, then you’ve got yourself a winner.

burlap rolls

While we mulled over what to order, Rona and I really loved the selection of totes.

Some of the totes come in packs of 6 or 10, which would be great for favors, etc. I would love to slap a nice monogram on those totes!

BurlapFabric.com is also a leading provider of jute fabric, and I was pretty jazzed about their variety of jute twine– at a bargain price, I might add.

And if you love banners, but don’t like cutting them out, they also sell burlap and linen banners with the option of printing on them for you.

I could go on and on about the diversity of burlap, linen, duckcloth, jute, twine, sisal products, etc. that this site has, but check it out for yourself. Shipping is super fast, and they are very helpful and sweet!

In the end, after much deliberation, Rona, Lisa, and I decided upon some very cool coffee bags, webbing, and some natural burlap (we got table runner width –it was sanitized– and also 72″ width)! We cannot wait to show you what we are cooking up. Burlap for days…

In the meantime, feast your eyes on a burlap fantasy come true!
