DIY Door Silencer

These days L is obsessed with opening and closing doors. OBSESSED!! I can just hear my mom now “well, why don’t you just keep all your doors closed”? We try, but the girl is fast, like Flash fast. As soon we crack a door she’s there. I fear for her little fingers every time she touches a door. So I decided to DIY a few door silencers to prevent squished fingers. Their intended purpose is to close doors quietly for sleeping babies but the padding will also prevent doors from slamming. They were very easy to sew, literally a few rectangles. Each one took about five minutes.

Materials (for 1):

  • 1/8 yard fabric (I used scrap fabric from other projects)
  • 5″ x 3″ batting or felt (use another layer or two of fabric if you don’t have these)
  • two 2” long elastic or two 13” long ribbon

DIY silencer materials

*If you don’t have any scrap fabric, upcycle some old clothes.

Step 1:

Cut two 5” x 3” rectangles from your fabric. Cut one rectangle of the same size from your padding. I eyeballed my door lock and this measurement seemed appropriate. Be sure to measure yours if you have something other than the standard lock. I used 2 different fabrics for the front and back.

Step 2:

Place one of the fabric rectangles on top of the padding (wrong side down). Make a U shape with an elastic piece. Pin each end of the U to the shorter side of the rectangle. Make sure the elastic U lays on the fabric and not outward like a handle.

*If you are using ribbon, fold the excess neatly and pin to the center of the rectangle.

Step 3:

Place the second fabric rectangle on top of the first one, right sides together. Pin all the way around.

Step 4:

Sew all the way around the rectangle leaving a small opening. Be sure to back stitch on the elastic/ribbon for a stronger hold.

Step 5:

Turn your rectangle inside out from the opening.

Step 6:

Sew the opening shut with a blind stitch. Ta-da! If you are feeling fancy, do step 7.

*If you are using ribbon, cut each loop in half and trim the ends.

Step 7 (optional):

Do a top stitch all around for a decorative touch. If you are feeling super fancy, I recommend ironing the seams before top stitching.

I like the look of the ribbon tie ones better, but the elastic ones are easier to hook on and off. Now that these are on the doors I don’t cringe as much when L is pushing a door shut. I have a feeling these will also come in handy during the moody, back talking teenage years.

Now my husband seems to think these are unnecessary. Your thoughts? Do you think they make a practical baby shower gift? Do your children have any strange obsessions?

Beach Baby Essentials

Over Memorial Day weekend, we loaded up the car for our first beach trip of the reason. Going to the beach with a energizer bunny 14 months old meant we needed to be prepared. You never know when a meltdown is going to happen and how she’s going to react to the sand and frigid ocean water. I loaded the beach bag with a few, what I consider as, beach baby essentials to make the trip enjoyable for the whole family.

1. Functional beach wear

I put L in a short sleeve rash guard and a reusable swim diaper. I prefer this combo over a one piece suit. This option allows for more coverage and easy changing in case of accidents. The reusable swim diaper has worked well in the pool before, but this time I noticed a couple giant wet spots on the beach blanket (we were there for 2.5 hours). I never tried disposable swim diapers before. Are they more absorbent?

2. Sun screen

With L’s eczema and sensitive skin, we are very selective with the products we use on her. We’ve tried many other organic brands’ sunscreen. The Badgers brand is the only one that hasn’t caused any skin irritations or flare ups. Because it’s all natural plant based, the consistency is super creamy which makes it difficult to rub in. But I’m ok with my child looking a bit pasty.

3. Convenient cleansers

Hand sanitizer and baby powder are my go to items for the beach. L’s into picking up random things these days. Having sanitizer on hand makes for easy cleaning for a piece of mind. And I’m sure you all know about the trick of getting sand off your body with baby powder. It really is magical!

4. Toys

I did not pack a ton, just a few sand toys and bubbles. L loves to people watch; there is plenty of that on the beach. In a pinch, I can always give her an empty water bottle to entertain her for a little while. The girl loves playing with trash. Who am I to judge?

5. Snacks and treats

L loves cheddar bunnies and yogurt drops. We usually reserve them as special treats. I figured she would be pretty happy with munching on those. I packed a snack pouch in the cooler as a healthy option. And of course, her favorite sippy cup.

Oh! The beach bag was a $7.99 find at TJ Maxx. It’s made from a very fine burlap. I liked it so much I bought a second one in a blue crab print. Gotta represent MD!

We had a great time. The weather was perfect. L was a little apprehensive about the sand at first, but once I broke out the toys and snacks she was happy. I think the 2 hour morning nap helped a little too. Are you ready for beach season? Do you have any beach essential items? What are your tricks to keep the kids busy and happy on the beach?

A Cowboy Nursery

Last week, I shared with you a nursery fit for a beach baby. Remember that focal wall? So cool. This week, I am lucky to share with you a cowboy nursery fit for TWO cowboys. Karli, a high school teammate and friend, and  freshman year roommate of mine, is due with twins any day now. She put together a nursery for her two cowboys that is too sweet.

Karli also has a delicious blog of her own, k.gourmae, where she shares delectable recipes that are wholesome, fresh, and gorgeous. Just recently, I tried her recipe for Bulletproof Coffee, and she wasn’t lying!

I love how Karli carries out this cowboy theme throughout her nursery, and throws in some personal sentiments and handcrafted pieces.

Above her changing table is this homemade sign. Rustic, sweet, and sentimental. Karli made this sign herself using a reverse stencil technique.  If she wasn’t going to be quite busy and very smitten with two young cowboys, I’d ask her to share a little tutorial on how she did it…

She also has these adorable farm themed framed prints above each of her boys’ cribs. Karli found them on etsy here, and framed and matted them herself.

And I love the Letter Hooks for each of her guys and the framed print on burlap (you know if it is burlap, then you know I’m in love).

What caught my eye when Karli shared these photos, was the gorgeous dresser. I love the color and the cowboy themed knobs, which Karli swapped out from the ones that came with it. It is the perfect splash of color for the room. While Karli says it was a challenge to find a dresser/changing table to fit in her space, I’d say she kicked that challenge’s behind.

And check out the gorgeous chair and ottoman she has in here for holding those sweet baby boys. Karli found this chair and a half, and thought it would be perfect for nursing, reading, and eventually it could find its way out of the nursery because nothing about it screams baby.

And her husband, added shelves in the closet and constructed the built-in bookshelf in the room, which is crucial for a room, which will sleep two babies.

Karli definitely had a challenge of fitting two cribs into one room and finding a multi-tasking dresser/changing station to fit, but she did so beautifully.

Thank you, Karli for sharing your nursery and congratulations!

Do you have a room that you tied together beautifully? I’d love to share it!
